Most people book a private chef for one evening — a birthday, an arrival dinner, a night they want to be special. Fewer realise that the same chef can stay with you for the whole stay. And once you've experienced a week of it, the single-dinner version starts to feel like a sample. Here's what full-time service in a St. Barts villa actually looks like, day by day.

The rhythm changes, not just the food

The real difference isn't the number of meals — it's that nobody has to think about them. No one is driving to the supermarket in Gustavia, no one is negotiating restaurant reservations for eight people, no one is quietly worrying about what happens at lunchtime. Breakfast appears when people surface. Lunch adapts to whether you came back from the beach at one or at three. Dinner is already handled. The days get their shape back.

We've written about why morning service is often the real luxury — over a full week, that effect compounds.

A menu that learns as the week goes on

This is the part that surprises guests most. On day one the chef is working from your notes. By day three she knows that one of you can't resist anything with passion fruit, that the children will eat fish if it doesn't look like fish, and that nobody wants a heavy dinner after a long day on the water. A single evening can't do that. A week can — the cooking gets more personal every day.

Over several days, a chef also has room to build variety properly:

  • Light, quick lunches on beach days; longer, slower dinners on the nights you stay in.

  • One standout evening — a tasting menu or a celebration dinner — planned into the week.

  • Nights off, if you want to try the island's restaurants without wasting a booked service.

  • Market-led cooking — what's genuinely good that morning, not what a fixed menu demands.

That last point matters more here than most places — see the ingredients that make a meal in St. Barts taste like nowhere else.

It's often better value than people assume

Booked as a series of one-off dinners, chef service is priced per evening. Booked as a full-time engagement, the arithmetic shifts: the set-up time is shared across many meals rather than repeated each night, and you're no longer paying restaurant prices for a group two or three times a day. For larger parties in particular, a week of chef service frequently costs less than the same week eaten out.

Who it suits best

Families with young children, groups of friends sharing a large villa, multi-generational stays where everyone eats at a different hour, and anyone whose holiday is genuinely about slowing down. If your week involves more than a couple of meals you'd rather not organise, full-time service is worth pricing properly.

Full-time weeks are the first to fill in high season, so this is one to plan early.
